About your role
As the Fair Mining and Material Sources Manager at Fairphone, you lead the development and coordination of Fairphone’s Fair Mining and Recycling programs. These initiatives focus on creating positive impact at Fairphone’s material sources, in line with Fairphone’s Fair Materials Roadmap. You work closely with Fairphone’s Circular Supply Chain Manager to integrate these sources into our product supply chains, as well as with the wider team responsible for Fairphone’s due diligence, climate/nature, and circularity agendas. Your work directly contributes to Fairphone’s mission of creating a fairer electronics industry by driving systemic change in sustainable and responsible sourcing of materials from mined and recycled sources.
Key Responsibilities & Objectives
Key Objectives:
Designing and implementing innovative programs and partnerships to improve the social and environmental performance of mining and recycling operations in Fairphone’s value chain, with a focus on artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) and small-scale recycling interventions.Act as a thought leader in sustainable materials sourcing, represent Fairphone in building industry coalitions, promoting the company’s thought leadership agenda, and driving measurable progress across Fairphone’s Fair Material objectives.
Strategic Program Management:
Further develop and implement Fairphone’s Fair Materials Roadmap 2030, aligning long-term goals with the company’s mission and sustainability targets.
Develop and manage scalable solutions and thought leadership programs on mined and recycled material sourcing, with the goal to improve sustainability and positive impact especially for small producers, including fundraising from public and private sources to support these initiatives.
Conduct research and follow (industry) developments on responsible sourcing, mining practices, assessments and certifications, as well as best practices to maintain Fairphone’s position as a leader in sustainable materials sourcing.
Apply global supply chain sustainability and responsible sourcing standards, including the OECD due diligence guidelines and chain of custody models, to Fairphone’s fair materials initiatives.
Partnership Development and Stakeholder Engagement:
Build and maintain coalitions and partnerships required to advance Fairphone’s fair materials agenda, working with stakeholders from the industry, civil society, and public organizations.
Represent Fairphone in public forums, conferences, and partnerships to obtain and share lessons learned, and foster industry-wide change.
Inspire adoption of responsible mining/recycling practices by promoting Fairphone’s innovations within the broader electronics industry, and integrate Fairphone’s fair materials achievements into external communications and campaigns.
Impact Steering, Measurement, and Reporting:
Ensure data collection, analysis, and reporting for Fairphone’s Fair Materials KPI, connected programs, and projects.
Lead the reporting process for the Fair Materials KPI, including contributions to sustainability reports, Impact Reports, and KPI audits.
Track and measure the effectiveness of fair materials programs, ensuring alignment with Fairphone’s impact KPIs and sustainability goals.
Your Skills & Experience
You have a minimum of 5 years experience in working on mineral value chains or mining, including on small producers such as artisanal- and small-scale mining and small-scale recycling in Africa, Latin America and Asia.
You have relevant formal training, for example in human rights, international development, sustainability.
You have strong experience in developing and managing projects and partnerships, including engagement with industry associations and multi-stakeholder groups.
You are familiar with relevant regulation, standards and good practice guidelines relating to due diligence, responsible sourcing and chains of custody, and Environmental, Social/Human Rights and Governance (ESG) aspects in mining.
You are used to building and maintaining relationships internally and externally; engaging with public, private, and civil society stakeholders, communicating to different audiences and inspiring and influencing others.
You are adept at problem-solving, devising solutions, adapting approaches to devise the right course of action, and providing advice and recommendations to the wider company.
You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; French or Spanish are a plus!
Preferably, you are familiar with working with macOS, Google Workspace, and Basecamp.
