Job Description
As part of the Opto-Electronics Section, you will have the following responsibilities:
- Support to technology development contracts and performance of in-house design work. In particular, assist in the establishment of requirements and configurations for payload equipment and sub-systems involving: Solid state lasers, Fibre-optic components, Detectors and focal plane instrumentation; Quantum-electronic devices and systems, including optical atomic clocks; Superconducting devices and sensors.
- Review and evaluation of technical documentation and design dossiers.
- Perform analysis and elaborate outline design and configurations.
- Assist, where appropriate, external and internal testing, verification and evaluation of opto-electronic systems and components, including ground and airborne measurement campaigns.
- Contribute to the definition, maintenance and use of design, engineering and verification software tools for photonic systems and components.
- Definition, design, establishment of performance budgets and performance analysis of optical and quantum communication test set-ups.
- Procurement and commissioning of technical parts and devices for laboratory setups.
- Assembly, verification and maintenance of opto-electronic test setups.
- Laboratory hardware control programming (eg. Matlab, Simulink, Python).
- Independent execution of optical tests in the opto-electronics laboratory on components and systems related to optical and quantum communication, lasers and detectors, high-speed (>100 Gbs) communication equipment (for coherent transmission) and digital signal processing (DSP).
- Provision of expert technical support to ESA projects and studies for the development of opto-electronic components and subsystems throughout all project phases.
- Support the development of opto-electronic technologies and subsystems with emphasis on testing, verification and calibration.
- Definition and follow-up of instrument on-ground test and calibration activities and of in-orbit commissioning.
- Evaluation of procurement proposals
And/Or
- Assist in the calibration of the optical test set-up to allow quantitative laser damage tests.
- Operate the Laser Induced Damage test set-up during test sequences.
- Prepare test samples.
- Assist in the analysis and interpretation of the test data.
Qualifications
- Master in optoelectronics engineering, in physics or a relevant engineering discipline. Possession of PhD would be considered an asset.
- Candidates must be eligible for security clearance from an EU Member State national security administration.
- Experience in the design, development and testing of opto-electronic systems and components.
- Good system experience in the use and application of fibre-optic components and sensors in spacecraft engineering.
- And/Or Experience with high-power pulsed laser systems, complex optical set-ups and vacuum systems.
- Fluency in English is mandatory; knowledge of another European language is an advantage.
