The Peng lab at the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in Utrecht is seeking a highly motivated and talented postdoc to join our team. We focus on liver cancer and related disorders that predispose to liver cancer, with the overarching goal of understanding disease mechanisms and developing innovative therapeutic strategies. As part of our team, you will leverage state-of-the-art single-cell, spatial and organoid technologies in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment.
Research focus
We welcome candidates with a strong interest in liver cancer, e.g., hepatoblastoma and hepatocellular carcinoma, childhood liver disorders, or developmental biology. The project will focus on deciphering disease origins, progression, regeneration and cellular plasticity. You will employ techniques such as single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, whole-genome sequencing, high-throughput screening, CRISPR-based functional screening and patient-derived organoid models.
You will work closely with in-house technology platforms, including the Single Cell Genomics Facility, Big Data Core and High Throughput Screening Facility. Our research is embedded in a highly collaborative environment, both within the Utrecht Science Park and through international collaborations. The specific project direction will be tailored to align with the candidate’s background and interests.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:
- PhD in a related discipline.
- Expertise in one of the following areas:
- Single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, whole genome sequencing, proteomics, organoid modelling, CRISPR screening
- Liver biology, developmental biology, or cancer biology.
- Strong publication record, creativity, and analytical skills
- Fluency in English, Excellent communication and team-working abilities

The Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology is an integrated hospital and research institute, which integrates healthcare, research and education on pediatric cancer, in a single location in Utrecht. Our institute aims to provide the highest level of care for all children with cancer, with optimal quality of life. The center brings together the best possible care and scientific research, creating a unique interdisciplinary institute for pediatric oncology in Europe. The Peng group is recognized for pioneering 3D hepatocyte organoid systems and continue to develop organoid-based platforms for mechanistic discovery and preclinical testing.
Our offer
We provide a full-time position (36 hours) in a stimulating research environment with ample opportunities for professional development. You will initially be appointed for the duration of one year, with the possibility of extension. Your gross monthly salary will depend on your experience and background, starting in scale 60 with 8,33% gross monthly salary holiday allowance and 8,33 % end-of-year bonus. The Princess Máxima Center operates according to the collective labor agreement ‘cao algemene ziekenhuizen’.
