Project Technician in Food Chemistry

As a project technician (max 2 years) you will assist sample handling and analysis at the Laboratory of Food Chemistry within a collaborative project between our group, Wageningen Research BU Greenhouse Horticulture, and Kraft Heinz. The overall research project studies pectin formation and development in tomatoes, and involves growing various tomato cultivars, analyzing their pectin characteristics, and exploring practical applications in tomato-based products. The goal is to gain a deeper understanding of pectin in tomatoes and how this might positively impact KraftHeinz tomato product portfolio.

Your duties and responsibilities include:
  • handling and fractionation of tomato samples and tomato-based products;
  • subject all samples/fractions to various screening analytical protocols, such as carbohydrate content and composition, degree of methylation, and high performance size-exclusion chromatography;
  • in selected samples, monitor endogenous enzyme activity in high-throughput assays;
  • work together with the PhD-candidate (same project) at the Laboratory of Food Chemistry to gain a deeper understanding of pectin in tomatoes;
  • excellent communication with other project partners (Wageningen Research BU Greenhouse Horticulture, and Kraft Heinz).

Depending on your experience, we offer a competitive gross salary of between €3218,- and €4298,- for a full-time working week of 38 hours, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale 8).
Additionally, a contract for 0,8 FTE can be discussed. As for your contract, we initially offer a one-year contract that can be extended with another year. Of course, we are happy to have a conversation with you if you have any questions about this.

Good oral communication skills, structured way of working, eye for providing data overviews (outcome of analytics), willingness to assist others, enjoy working with tomato materials, are all essential competences.

You also possess:
  • a BSc degree in food, bio- or analytical chemistry, or in a similar field;
  • experience with liquid and/ or gas chromatography;
  • affinity for working with biochemical assays/ enzymes;
  • affinity for collaboration with industry.

In our international working environment there is an increasing amount of communication in English. For this position it is about B1 English language level.
