Are you interested in working in a consortium that is making a positive social impact? Then join the Department of Information and Computing Sciences as Scientific Programmer and strengthen our IT team.

Your job

In this position, you will contribute to the NWA project: “Doing What Works for Children: new approaches for (future) professionals in Dutch youth care”. The role of Utrecht University (UU) in this project is to integrate existing technical applications for technology-enhanced learning in youth care, collaborating with researchers from project partners and professionals from youth care practice, and to add new applications where necessary. To achieve this, UU has established and leads the “Maaklab”. Here, researchers from various disciplines work closely together and collaborate with youth care practice professionals and organisations.

Your role will be to deliver technological designs and software tools for the project. These tools will cover a wide array such as training modules, learning analytics dashboards, and connections to other tools. Your tasks will include:

  • designing, developing, extending, releasing, combining, integrating, and maintaining software for the Doing What Works for Children project;
  • collaborate with various partners both inside and outside the Doing What Works for Children project to discuss requirements, perform pilots, set up experiments and develop or connect to solutions.

Your qualities

You have a pro-active, positive and problem-solving attitude and are motivated to work in an academic environment. Additionally, you have:

  • a Master’s degree in computing science or related discipline;
  • strong communication and organisational skills for effectively collaborating with diverse partners and managing multiple (development) tasks within the project;
  • software engineering knowledge;
  • demonstrated experience with programming applications and mainstream programming techniques (e.g. Python, Java, R, C++).

Our offer

  • A challenging position within a dynamic department;
  • a position for one year, with an extension to a total of three years upon successful assessment. Depending on available funding, it may be possible to create a fulltime position, but this is not yet certain;
  • a working week of 32 hours with a gross monthly salary, depending on experience and qualifications, between €3,546 and €5,538 in the case of full-time employment (salary scale 10 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU));
  • 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.

In addition to the terms of employment laid down in the CAO NU, Utrecht University has a number of schemes and facilities of its own for employees. This includes schemes facilitating professional development, leave schemes and schemes for sports and cultural activities, as well as discounts on software and other IT products. We also offer access to additional employee benefits through our Terms of Employment Options Model. In this way, we encourage our employees to continue to invest in their growth.
