Reporting directly to the European Head of Operations, the Head of Engineering, Europe will provide strategic technical leadership and engineering oversight for our European data centre portfolio. This senior leadership position is responsible for driving engineering excellence, ensuring optimal infrastructure performance, and leading technical innovation across European operations.
Technical Leadership & innovation
- Develop and execute the technical strategy for the European data centre portfolio, ensuring alignment with global engineering standards and business objectives
- Lead the engineering organization across multiple European locations, building and maintaining high-performing teams of mechanical, electrical, and controls engineers
- Drive innovation in data centre design, operations, and sustainability through the evaluation and implementation of new technologies and methodologies
Infrastructure Management
- Oversee the engineering aspects of critical infrastructure including power systems, cooling solutions, electrical distribution, and building management systems
- Establish technical standards and specifications for all European facilities, ensuring consistency and excellence in engineering practices
- Optimize infrastructure utilization and performance to support capacity management
- Ensure consistent delivery of world-class data centre operations, maintaining industry-leading standards
Technical Operations & Maintenance
- Develop comprehensive preventive, predictive and reactive maintenance programs for all critical infrastructure systems
- Establish and maintain engineering operational procedures, technical documentation, and standard operating procedures
- Lead root cause analysis investigations for critical incidents and implement technical improvements to prevent recurrence
Project Management & Implementation
- Oversee major technical projects including infrastructure upgrades, system replacements, and efficiency improvements
- Collaborate with Construction and Development teams on new facility designs, ensuring operational requirements and best practices are incorporated
- Manage capital expenditure projects related to engineering infrastructure improvements
Performance Optimization
- Drive continuous improvement in key technical metrics including Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE), and other critical engineering KPIs
- Develop and implement strategies to optimize energy efficiency and reduce operational costs
- Lead technical initiatives to improve reliability, availability, and maintainability of critical systems
Engineering Team Development
- Build and lead a best-in-class engineering organization across European locations
- Establish clear technical career paths and development opportunities for engineering staff
- Implement training programs to ensure technical teams maintain current knowledge of industry best practices and emerging technologies.
Technical Compliance & Standards
- Ensure compliance with industry standards (ISO, EN, IEEE etc) and regulatory requirements across all facilities
- Develop and maintain technical policies, procedures, and standards documentation
- Lead technical audits and assessments to ensure adherence to company standards and industry best practices.
Vendor & Technology Management
- Support the evaluation and select key technology vendors and engineering service providers
- Manage relationships with critical equipment manufacturers and technical service providers
- Drive the engineering technology roadmap development and implementation across the European portfolio
Cross Functional Integration
- Partner with Development and Construction teams to ensure operational requirements are integrated into new data centre designs and build specifications
- Collaborate with Investment and Asset Management teams to optimize facility performance, capital expenditure planning, and long-term value creation
- Coordinate with Finance and Procurement departments on budgeting, cost control, and vendor management strategies
Do you recognize yourself?
- 15+ years of progressive experience in critical facilities engineering, with specific focus on hyperscale data centres
- 10+ years in engineering leadership roles, managing large technical teams across multiple locations
- Proven track record of delivering large-scale technical projects and infrastructure improvements
- Experience working with hyperscale clients and managing complex technical requirements
- Deep technical knowledge of data centre mechanical and electrical systems
- Expert understanding of power distribution, cooling systems, and building management systems
- Strong knowledge of industry standards (ISO, EN, IEEE) and best practices
- Excellent project management and problem-solving capabilities
- Strong financial acumen for managing technical budgets and capital projects
- Fluent in English; additional European languages are advantageous
- Master's degree in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field required
- Professional Engineering license preferred
- Relevant industry certifications (e.g., ATD, CEng, PE) are valuable
- Regular travel (40-50%) across European locations and occasional global travel will be required
