High Voltage Engineering Europa B.V. is a global leader in the design and manufacture of advanced ion and electron beam systems. Our cutting-edge technology supports scientific research and industrial applications worldwide. We are established in Amersfoort since 1959 and we have approximately 70 employees.
We are seeking a physics or software oriented student to join our multidisciplinary team and contribute via an internship to the development of state-of-the-art particle accelerator systems.
Physics and software internships (HBO/WO)
Project title: Development of a beam optics modelling tool for particle accelerator systems
Project mission:
You will help advance the development of particle accelerator systems and their associated applications, working alongside a multidisciplinary team of physicists and (software) engineers. Your primary focus will be to develop a particle beam optics modeling tool that supports the design, optimization and operation of our particle accelerator systems.
What will you do?
Your work will involve setting up and programming the software required to model beam optics as well as implementation of additional functionality in the software. The results of your work will serve as a tool in our accelerator design process, which involves mechanical, electronic, software, and test engineering disciplines. The scope of the project could further be expanded to include verification of the beam optics simulation tool by means of measurements.
Specifically, your role will include:
- Getting familiar with the concepts of particle accelerators, beam dynamics and programming;
- Spearheading the development of a new software package for modeling and simulating our accelerator systems;
- Benchmarking of models using alternative software tools or established theoretical models;
- Documenting results and presenting findings to the broader engineering team;
- Optionally, supporting the experimental validation of simulation results where applicable.
Requirements:
- You are currently in your final year of either HBO or Master in either software engineering or/and physics;
- Proficient in programming in Python;
- Familiarity with optics is a plus.
What do you offer?:
- Pursuing a degree in (applied) physics and/or software engineering;
- Interested in particle accelerators, beam optics, or scientific computing;
- Comfortable with analytical calculations and simulation tools;
- The drive to learn more about Python and object orientated programming;
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills;
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities;
- Proficiency in English.
What we offer?:
- Internship compensation of around € 550 a month;
- Challenging and responsible position in a technically advanced working environment;
- Collaborative work environment with a focus on innovation;
- A multicultural, informal and open atmosphere where communication lines are short.
