Resident Engineer – Key Account (Schiphol/Netherlands)
About the Position:
Reporting to the Customer Service Lead, this is a technical role, providing on-site and remote support for Juniper Networks routing & switching products.
The Resident Engineer (RE) will be required to develop and maintain an expert level of knowledge on the products and software deployed within the customer environment. This position will be considered on-site at the customers primary location, based in Schiphol, Netherlands coupled with some European travel with occasional home-based working and attending Juniper sites within the Netherlands.
The Resident Engineer will be a key member of the technical team including colleagues from the Professional Services and Advanced Services organisations.
Responsibilities:
The RE will be a critical part of the operational team, representing Juniper and providing support, reaching out to the wider Juniper technical and engineering teams for extended support as necessary.
On occasions the RE maybe required to work extended hours coupled with on-call support for critical issues/escalations. Technical support to the customer may require the Resident Engineer:
- To hold design and information gathering workshops with the customer to understand the customer’s existing network design and technical requirements.
- To understand the customer’s organisational structure and become familiar with the customer’s network implementation and support processes and procedures.
- To carry out testing of new features and functionality required by the customer in a laboratory environment and to implement and verify that they are operating correctly in the live network.
- To test patches and fixes to operating software and to ensure that they are implemented and functioning correctly in the live network.
- To troubleshoot equipment and network problems assisting JTAC (Juniper Technical Assistance Centre) with technical cases through to problem resolution.
- To raise equipment, Return Material Authorisations (RMA’s) and to track these through to problem resolution
- To perform network optimisation and configuration reviews.
- To produce a written summary report of the status of equipment and network problems on a regular basis to the customer.
- To hold technology workshops with the customer to discuss equipment and network problems, and to provide case status updates, including the reasons for any problems encountered and the workarounds and/or solutions that are being tried.
- To hold knowledge transfer workshops for the customer’s design, implementation and support personnel to configure and operate Juniper Networks products.
- To assist the customer to develop Network Operating and Equipment Operating Procedures.
- To peer with other employees performing similar resident engineering roles where lessons learned may help minimize risk associated with major network upgrades or changes in the network.
The Resident Engineer will be expected to develop secondary skills in other products and solutions in the Juniper product portfolio.
Minimum Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this role MUST have a minimum 5 years’ experience providing implementation and technical support of networking products in LAN, WAN, and developing automation scripts for Internet services environments.
- An understanding of the protocols surrounding IP/MPLS service provider networks. These skills should include:
- VPNs and the associated tunneling technologies (MPLS, VXLAN, GRE, etc.)
- TCP/IP fundamentals
- Routing protocol operation (OSPF, IS-IS, RSVP, IPv6 and BGP)
- Comfortable with Linux or other UNIX implementations, with scripting skills.
- Technical experience in the installation and operation of switches and IP routers. This includes hands-on operation of management tools and network analysers.
- Strong experience in troubleshooting complex issues both at the device-level and network-level, in a multi-vendor environment. Able to isolate and identify configuration, design and product issues.
- Previous experience with Juniper Networks products (MX, PTX, EX, QFX, SRX devices) and JUNOS software.
- Strong Interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a diverse, cross functional and multicultural team.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills. Ability to work efficiently on multiple projects and under pressure.
- Strong communication skills; ability to clearly articulate findings in written and verbal communications targeting different audiences: technical and non-technical, staff and management.
- Fluent in English (speaking, reading and writing).
Preferred Qualifications:
The following credentials are a strong plus for this position:
- Juniper Networks Technical Certifications: JNCIP or JNCIE in routing & switching.
- Previous experience in network design, installation and deployment with MX, EX, QFX, PTX, SRX in a Service Provider or large enterprise environment.
