Advertising is one of the fastest growing areas in eBay, defining the future of ecommerce. As sellers shift budgets from traditional channels to ecommerce platforms like eBay, we have a unique opportunity to innovate and lead. Our Ads team builds ML and GenAI services to empower sellers and optimize ad campaigns, surfacing high quality items for buyers and driving business growth.

As an Applied Researcher within our Advertising team, you will play a pivotal role in developing advanced machine learning and generative AI models to guide sellers and power the next generation of ads products. You will work with large-scale data and state-of-the-art LLMs to deliver actionable insights and innovative ad experiences. Your work will directly impact our guidance systems, enhance ad performance, and deliver value for our sellers. You will also drive innovation by applying GenAI to create new ad experiences and solutions.
What you will accomplish
Machine Learning & GenAI Development: Design, implement, validate, and deploy machine learning models tailored to advertising applications. Leverage LLMs to build systems that provide actionable guidance and innovative ad experiences.
Data Understanding: Analyze large volumes of production data to produce business insights and identify opportunities for ML and GenAI solutions.
Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with product managers, engineers, and other researchers to integrate ML and GenAI insights into our advertising products. Ensure our seller guidance systems are aligned with user needs and business goals.
Innovation and Research: Stay at the forefront of GenAI, LLMs, and advertising technologies. Contribute to internal and external research communities by publishing findings, attending conferences, and participating in collaborative projects.
What you will bring
Education: Ph.D. or M.S. in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field with a focus on machine learning, data science, or generative AI.
Experience: 5+ years in applied research or development of data analysis, traditional machine learning and generative AI models, with hands-on experience building and deploying these models in real-world applications, preferably with the advertising industry or a closely related field, i.e. search, recommendation system and NLP.
Technical Proficiency: Strong programming skills in Python, Java or C/C++. Expertise in ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch), and experience with big data technologies (Hadoop, Spark).
Analytical Skills: Outstanding ability to analyze large datasets, identify trends, and derive actionable insights. Expertise in data mining, segmentation, and SQL.
Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse, international teams and convey sophisticated technical concepts to non-technical partners.
