Tax Senior Vice-President – Netherlands and direct markets

We’re seeking a future team member for the role of Senior Vice President, Global Tax Technical Research and Direct Markets, to join the Client Tax Group within the Enterprise Custody Services Platform. This role can be located in Amsterdam, Dublin or Manchester, and is a Hybrid schedule (4 days per week in-office required).
The Client Tax Group focuses on tax strategy, development and enhancement of tax services, tax risk management, market presence, client facing tax support and leveraging tax expertise across BNY globally. The key component for this role is the custody tax knowledge and background for the Dutch market. This position will report to the manager of the Global Tax Technical Research and Direct Markets team and will cover all programs and activities influencing custody and securities in the Netherlands market where tax is concerned.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
- Monitoring of tax changes in the Netherlands (and other markets as may be required from time to time) and ensuring that these get incorporated in the custody framework timely, including drafting concise, factual internal and external communications.
- Tax technical guidance on withholding tax in the Dutch market (to service delivery groups (e.g. tax operations) and business units.
- Monitoring cross-border withholding tax relief based on double taxation agreements, European Court of Justice claims or tax exemptions provided by local law.
- Monitoring European and local Financial Transaction Taxes (FTTs).
- Preparation of analysis to support discussions/meetings with Dutch tax authorities/government bodies as necessary to advocate workable solutions to tax relief models.
- Research, preparation of analysis and communication of key regulatory initiatives impacting investment services.
- Guidance on US FATCA and the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) for the Netherlands business.
- Guidance on DAC6.
- Work with Dutch clients to champion solutions, both internally and externally, facilitating discussion for decision making across multiple lines of business.
- Hold regular meetings with Dutch clients to review tax changes and where necessary work closely with the clients’ dedicated tax service provide/tax advisor.
- Work with other teams of the Client Tax Group in ad-hoc projects as they arise in relation to global initiatives (e.g. FASTER, Financial Transaction Taxes).
- Assist in sales (e.g. RFPs) and distribution channel support.
- Implement marketing collateral, thought leadership and education.
The role also covers the management of tax audits and other tax related requests by the Dutch Tax Authorities, as well as the identification, design and implementation of process improvements for effective tax processing/reporting/planning under Dutch law. Participation in tax working group meetings of industry associations in the Netherlands is also part of the role, as well as attending meetings with clients and speaking at tax conferences. The successful candidate may be also required to support other direct markets (e.g. Ireland, UK, Germany), carrying out similar activities as the ones noted above.
To be successful in this role, we are seeking the following:
- Preferably qualification as a tax advisor and / or tax lawyer in the Netherlands.
- Extensive tax experience in the Investment Services Business (domestic and foreign withholding taxes, systems of global exchange of tax related information, financial transaction taxes, taxation of investment funds) obtained through significant amount of experience gained at a custody bank, financial service provider or investment fund company.
- Native/fluent Dutch speaker and professional skills of the English language
- Custody tax knowledge in other markets would be beneficial.
- Strong client focus, with proven experience of working with large asset managers.
- Team player able to work across multiple lines of business with excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
- Strong analytical and managerial skills.
- Proven ability to use electronic tax research engines
- Ability to self-manage, prioritize and execute
- Other language capabilities (especially German) are preferable but not critical
