Job Title:
AI Architect
Location:
Hybrid/NL/UK
About the Role
We are looking for a technically exceptional Senior or Principal AI Scientist to oversee the development and implementation of artificial intelligence strategies within MMR for real-time image-guided medical interventions. This is a senior-level role focused on hands-on development, technical architecture, and solving complex problems in clinical settings.
You will architect and implement end-to-end AI pipelines, extract insights from clinical multimodal data, and work with a team of data scientists, machine learning engineers, and analysts to define how artificial intelligence enhances robotic systems to improve patient outcomes in real-time applications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and deployment of deep learning and computer vision models for medical use.
- Design, implement, and optimize data processing pipelines across structured and unstructured healthcare datasets, including real-time imaging.
- Translate clinical needs into ML/AI solutions, working closely with cross-disciplinary teams including clinicians, mechanical engineers, software engineers, and regulatory experts.
- Architect and deliver AI systems that meet performance, safety, and regulatory standards for real-world use.
- Mentor junior engineers and scientists, promoting best practices in software architecture, model reproducibility, and data pipeline automation.
- Define and execute the AI/ML/data roadmap: data governance, cloud-based MLOps, model validation, scalability, and deployment strategy.
- Ensure data security, privacy, and compliance in all aspects of model development and deployment.
- Integrate with data scientists to scale machine learning pipelines and infrastructure for deployment across environments.
- Deliver end-to-end solutions, from problem definition to post-launch operations, in alignment with product and patient outcomes.
What We’re Looking For:
- Degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Biomedical Engineering, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field (Ph.D. preferred).
- Minimum of 10+ years (Ph.D.), 13+ years (M.S.), or 15+ years (B.S.) of relevant industry experience in pharma, medtech, or healthcare AI applications.
- Deep technical knowledge in machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision, especially for real-time applications
- Proficiency in Python and C++
- Proven experience with large-scale datasets, particularly healthcare and clinical imaging data.
- Strong understanding of AI/ML platforms, libraries, and best practices (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, OpenCV).
- Proficiency with databases (SQL/NoSQL), data versioning, and source control (Git/GitHub).
- Demonstrated ability to build, deploy, and maintain ML/AI pipelines, with working knowledge of MLOps, model serving, and CI/CD for AI.
- Familiarity with healthcare data standards (e.g., DICOM, HL7, NIfTI) and data privacy regulations (HIPAA, GDPR).
- Track record of delivering ML/AI solutions in clinical or highly regulated environments, ideally for surgical robotics, imaging, or medical devices.
- Sophisticated communication skills — ability to explain technical solutions clearly to both technical and clinical stakeholders.
- Strong knowledge of cloud infrastructure and services (e.g., AWS S3, EC2, SageMaker).
Preferred Experience:
- Experience with real-time imaging, video data, and 3D reconstruction
- Familiarity with commercially available healthcare datasets, external data licensing challenges, data collection and labelling challenges.
- Prior experience in regulated healthcare environments (e.g., FDA, CE mark, ISO standards).
Must-have Qualities
- Technical leadership in AI/ML with deep domain knowledge and problem-solving mindset.
- Hands-on developer and systems thinker.
- Proven ability to translate real clinical needs into scalable AI systems.
- Ethical mindset, understanding the stakes of clinical AI deployment.
- Strong emphasis on data quality, security, reproducibility, and model governance.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across multi-disciplinary teams (engineering, clinical, regulatory).
- Exceptional communication and mentoring skills to foster team growth and innovation.
What we offer:
- Join an international and interdisciplinary team based in the Netherlands (Zwolle) and Central London fostering a collaborative and innovative work culture.
- Contribute to a rapidly growing medical device startup with ambitious global impact goals, making a significant difference in healthcare.
- A central London office with a well-equipped prototyping space. Access continuous learning and professional development through training programs, workshops, and conferences.
- Thrive in an inclusive and diverse workplace that values and supports every team member.
- An attractive salary package, competitive with industry standards.
