The AvatarZOO project investigates learning with emerging technologies involving extended reality. We focus on how, when, why, and who benefits from using these technologies. The goal of our work is to develop evidence-based knowledge that can enhance the learning effectiveness of when using these technologies. By guiding instructional designers to develop learning material more optimally, teachers to integrate lessons successfully, and clearly define targeted learning outcomes, we strive to explore the full potential and pitfalls of using emerging technologies in education.
As a Research Assistant, your duties involve giving anatomic and clinical procedures instructions to your direct collague working as a model maker within the AvatarZOO project. You review annotation and anatomic details of the models while being the interface in between constructing the models and interacting with the veterinary and broadly medical clinicians. This role is part of a larger group of researchers and technicians working within and outside the veterinary faculty. This means that you will connect with larger national projects, such as the national growth fund Ombion Centre for animal-free biomedical translation.
Your qualities
- You have a Master's degree in (Veterinary) Medicine.
- You have knowledge in the fields related to anatomy and clinical procedures.
- You are acquainted with computer programmes related to making virtual reality models. You enjoy finetuning the details, so the models will be as realistic as possible.
- You are analytical and communicative, flexible, committed and resilient.
- You have good communication skills to translate the anatomic and clinical content to computer science experts that will make the models.
- Your style is development-oriented: you are able to monitor the progress of the projects and highlight possible bottlenecks or further possible developments.
- You have an excellent command of Dutch and English, both spoken and written.
Our offer
- An employment contract for 12 months with the prospect of a permanent employment contract;
- a working week of 24-32 hours and a gross monthly salary between €3,708 and €5,057 in the case of full-time employment (salary scale 9 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU));
- 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;
- a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.

At the Department of Clinical Sciences, you will work alongside approximately 150 veterinarians and a similar number of support staff. Approximately two-thirds of the veterinarians are specialists in various disciplines; the remaining one-third consists of interns, residents and PhD students. Together we are responsible for the education of veterinary students, provision of clinical services to horses and companion animals, and both clinical and more fundamental research in the areas of regenerative medicine, locomotion, genetics and reproduction.
Anatomy & Physiology is part of the Clinical Sciences department. Our focus is on veterinary and life sciences education and research in the fields of anatomy, (patho)physiology, embryology, and stem cells and innovation of education using new technologies.
Our research and teaching work is inspired by the principles of the transition to animal-free innovation. We focus on better science (education and research) with fewer laboratory animals. We are part of the Ombion Centre for animal-free biomedical translation.
